What is Uglieland 1923?

In 1920’s post war Perth, the Ugly Men’s Association was a very important fundraising organisation raising capital through their much loved Carnivals – Uglieland in Fremantle and White City on the foreshore of Perth. They raised money for all sorts of charities – from war widows to purchasing new hospital equipment. In 1923 they Association gave funds to the Royal Perth Hospital for their new state of the art X-Ray machines.
in 2023 we invite you to come watch our fabulously fearless circus performers as they conjure up Uglieland 1923. Come and experience a sheep shearing competition, stand back from the fearsome Lizard Man, and gasp at our high flying flappers. Join in with a tug of war competition and join the Perth City Band for a dance with the Charleston.
This production has been partly funded by the City of Perth and is a part of the Boorloo Heritage Festival. The Academy will also present this production at the Fremantle International Street Arts Festival.
