CircusWA invites audiences to experience a powerful celebration of family, connection and the moments that make a life, with We Live Here by Flipside Circus (Brisbane), developed from a creative residency in Queensland’s children’s hospice Hummingbird House.

Combining extraordinary circus skills with heartfelt storytelling, We Live Here is an inspiring, funny and poignant performance for the whole family. The work draws on the real-life stories and experiences of parents, siblings and guests of Hummingbird House, exploring resilience, chaos, love and the beauty that can be found in a shared moment.

Originally commissioned by Metro Arts and premiered in 2018, We Live Here has gone on to captivate audiences across Australia, including sell-out seasons at Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Brisbane Festival, Empire Theatres Toowoomba, and a return season at Metro Arts. In 2021 CircusWA presented the work at Awesome Festival. In August and September 2026, We Live Here is returning for a WA state tour including Broome, Albany, Margaret River, Mandurah and Perth.

“Circus creates opportunities for people to connect, express themselves, take risks, celebrate each other and experience a sense of belonging. Those things can be incredibly meaningful for children and families who sit on the edges of accessibility to creative activities and physical infrastructure.” Says CircusWA Artistic Director Jo Smith.

CircusWA and Flipside Circus have been enjoying a long-distance creative relationship since 2020, sharing resources and skills exchanges. They have connected over a shared ambition to smudge the lines society draws between ability and disability. Both companies work hard to grow physically and creatively strong artists through deeply connected productions with young artists and the language of circus.

Hear insights behind this work and quality of life research conducted in WA

Following the showing of We Live Here in Subiaco on Thursday 3 September, audiences will be invited to stay to hear insights into the development of the show from Hummingbird House and research by Professor Jenny Downs from The Kids Research Institute Australia.

Representatives from Hummingbird House will share insights into the development of the production, Professor Downs will share research exploring quality of life and the positive impact that participation in circus and the arts can have on children and young people living with disability and their families.

Her research draws on CircusWA and DADAA’s 18-month long co-production of Experience Collider, a unique collaboration which brought together teenagers with high support needs disability and the youth circus academy. Together they learned to communicate and create a unique performance, guided by a team of professional performance artists and aligned health workers. This research followed the lives and experiences of the teenagers with high support needs and reflected a profound impact on their quality of life during this time.

A celebration of connection, resilience and belonging

At its heart, We Live Here is a celebration of the memories and relationships that make a life meaningful.

Through circus, storytelling and the experiences of real families, the work invites audiences to reflect on joy, grief, resilience, love and the importance of making space for all of these experiences.

For CircusWA, it is also an opportunity to continue asking how circus can contribute to a more connected, creative and inclusive community and how the arts can support people to feel seen, valued and part of something bigger.
